Chapter Six
To the Moors
Sam and Kosin spent the night in the realm of the Piskies before starting forth on their journey. It turned out that the network of caves and tunnels leading off the main cavern led to many different enchanted woodlands where the Piskies lived.
Sam was provided with a woodland bed for the night, not being able to fit himself into one of the Piskie tree houses. It consisted of a canvas roof, a bed of moss and leaves and blanket made from carefully woven together petals in every colour you could imagine. Sam had been camping before but never like this.
The sky was a deep midnight blue and was covered in a blanket of real stars this time. Despite it being a cloudless night, the air was still and mild.
Sam slept heavily and the following morning was woken by Kosin and some breakfast. Sam looked at it is sleepily and with a yawn said âKosin, where did you get this from, this bowl looks familiar.â
âYour house of courseâ replied Kosin. âI wanted you to have a good breakfast before we leftâ.
Sam was confused. âHow did you get into my house from here?â
âEasy,â replied Kosin with a smile, âall these tree doors lead back to your realm. Mine here leads directly to your new house, thatâs how I got the job of leading you here.â
âWhere in my house does it come out?â said Sam in surprise.
âBy the fireplace. It was how we used to travel and help people when we were neededâ replied Kosin, who was now busying himself packing a tiny backpack.
Sam sat in silence for a moment and considered what Kosin had said, then rapidly ate his cereal.
âWhere are we heading first then?â mumbled Sam through a mouth full of chocolate rice pops.
âWe head east towards the moors. Itâs many miles away from here, so we shall have to ride there.â Replied Kosin.
âRide? Replied Sam quizzically.
âYes ride, ride a horse, I have arranged to borrow some for our journey from a place not too far from here.â
âIâve never ridden a horse before,â said Sam
âOh, itâs easy, a bit like riding a bike, just less peddlingâ laughed Kosin.
Sam wasnât entirely sure if Kosin was joking, and he was very sure that riding a horse was not going to be like riding a bike, but he was at least willing to give it a go.
âYou did let my grandmother and mum know I was safe, didnât you?â
âOf course,â said Kosin, a little too quickly.
And with that, they set off. The first part of their journey, on foot, was easy. The path wound its way through the forest and as they came nearer to its edge, light began to filter down through the treetops to the forest floor. Everywhere the rays of light touched the floor, deep purple flowers sprung up. They had deep glossy green leaves and each flower was like a small bell, bowing its head to the floor. Just looking at them, Sam thought he could even hear them ringing.
